Charles Coates graduated from Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and Savannah College of Art and Design with a fine arts degree inSequential Art. Following graduation Charles worked in the comics field as a colorist and recently returned to Jacksonville to pursue his printmaking career.

The process of printmaking holds many fascinations for Charles. Unlike painting where a piece develops with every brush stroke, it may take hours-or even days of working on a plate before it’s sent through a press to track progress. This builds up incredible anticipation. There are few things more exciting for a printmaker than lifting the initial print, revealing an image that has taken days to create.

Major artists that have influenced Charles through his studies of printmaking are Joseph Pennell and James McNeil Whistler. Both are known for their superior etching techniques and for drawing directly from life onto the plate.

Charles’s subject matter is largely focused on identifiable places, along with the atmosphere and people that inhabit them.
